Improvement of Social Media

How would you improve the social media that you use?

  1. In regard to Facebook as a whole, I believe the platform functions well and does not need much improvement. However, from a personal perspective, I believe I can easily improve the efficiency of my personal account through a more strict filtering of friends and followed accounts for more relevant content.

  2. As far as the functionality of the platforms themselves, I do not think there is anything I would improve at this time. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and LinkedIn all function well and are very user-friendly. One area I think could be improved is privacy, as I feel there are always privacy concerns with social media. Even when an account is set to private, it is not always completely private.

I could improve my use of social media by engaging more with other users and posting relevant content, especially on Twitter. I am more of a consumer than a creator, and I do not post very often on any platforms. By posting more content, I can connect with more individuals, grow my professional network, and learn more about trends in technology and distance librarianship.

  3. I would like to become apart of particular groups on facebook that have to do with specific teachers in my area or my school. This way we would be able to communicate about what is happening in our schools and if there was a problem, people would be able to offer their assistance or advice. Also, I would like to join a more professional social media like LinkedIn. I would want to get to know others in my profession and talk about anything school related.

  4. I am not really tech-saavy enough nor do I utilize my social media accounts to their fullest potential to really have an opinion on how they could improve. However, when thinking about professional vs. personal social media accounts, I do not have a professional account, only a personal one. But since I am friends with many other educators and colleagues on my Facebook, many times their posts and opinions are shared with me or I sometimes get tagged in a post that I don't necessarily agree with. I know I can untag myself, but I think a good improvement would be that you have to approve anything you are tagged in before is can be posted for all to see. I know this can happen with photos, but I am not sure the same courteously applies for posts. This would be a good way of being proactive instead of reactive on social media so my digital footprint does not become intertwined with the opinions of someone else and mistaken as my own.

  5. I feel that I could be better at using social media in my professional life. Do I use social media professionally, yes. But it's never my first resource when I'm trying to think of something new to do with my students. I think part of it has to do with the stigma that follows social media. When you go through college, every professor tells you about the horror stories of social media and teachers. You're told that every word you post will be looked at by future employers. Unfortunately as a teacher there's a lot of negatives that surround social media but I know that there are more resources I could be using to benefit my students.

  6. I wish there was a better way to reduce the sharing of mis-information. Social media has a way of perpetuating non-truths. This is especially dangerous for people who don't have critical thinking skills and believe everything they see/read on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media outlets. I wish we had a better filter for false information.

  7. Since the main social media apps I use are Facebook and Instagram, I would improve them by first reducing ad content. Then, I would assure that users information was not being bought and sold. In addition I would reduce the algorithms that stifle ones networking. You really fall into a trap of only communicating with a small group of users.

  8. If there could be some way to filter out misinformation, I think that would be fantastic. We would assume that "news sources" are always providing us with factual information, even if it's biased, but many sources aren't obligated to report true news. Many of us don't know this and don't know how to know what isn't true. I also wish there was a better way to make sure the right people have access to what is meant for them, mostly for the protection of children.

  9. A couple things that I would improve with for the social media that I use would be to completely remove the ability to link all features together. It is a little scary that when I google search something, that it immediately pops up as an ad or a post on my Facebook and/or Instagram page. I find it a little unsettling especially since I have tried to keep most of my items private that this happens all through a click of a button (whether intentionally or accidentally). Also, I feel that I would like social media to notify you if someone screen shots or downloads any of your information such as photos or comments. I know that it happens, I just think it would be nice to know that if someone is screen capturing your information that a notification is sent to both parties. For example, I would like for the other user who is screen capturing or downloading your personal information, that some sort of notification is requested stating that the other party will be notified that you are doing this. That will then allow them to choose if they wish to continue to steal that information or not. I think that if someone who is trying to take your information (photos, posts, etc) for the purpose of creating a fake account or use it maliciously against you, that they should have to sign a consent form to let both parties know what is being done.

  10. There is not much that I would improve as far as my social media platforms. I am such an amateur user. I know that there are a lot of features that I just do not know how to use or participate in. One thing that I would improve, but do not know how is some of the privacy settings. I could be sitting at lunch with a friend talking about a new hair product or something and then later when I open up Facebook, there is an ad for that product. I wish I knew how to fix that. Other than that, it serves a good purpose for me and my family & friends.

  11. One of the biggest improvement I wish I could make on social media platforms as a whole is the algorithm. The algorithm that brings posts to the top of your feed and provides you with personal ad choices is a huge reason we have a large division in our society. While it makes sense from a marketing standpoint to pin-point the demographic you're trying to sell to, it also creates an echo chamber for any societal, political, or educational idea you might have. Not hearing an opposing view point because it has never been brought to your feed is a danger to critical thinking and problem solving as a whole. In a way, social media has forced us into reading/hearing what is fashionable for our lifestyle. I try to combat this by following multiple news sources and keeping those who I might disagree with in my feed (not muting them or blocking them) so that I can actively critique my own views of the world and society as a whole.

  12. The biggest improvement that I would make to social media is the connection between apps. I think it is crazy that I can look something up on Amazon, and five minutes later it is in a suggested ad on Facebook. Or even my husband and I have been talking about getting a peloton-and every ad on Hulu, Facebook, and Instagram has been some sort of bike. It drives me crazy!

  13. I find a ton of resources on both facebook and Instagram. It would be great, especially for facebook if there was a place I could save and organize all those posts. In addition it would be great if I had one central place to organize everything without having to log on to different apps.

  14. As a way to improve the social media that I use, I would like to go through my friend lists and reduce the number of followers I have. Throughout the years, I've gained a high following of people. When I started using Facebook, it was all about connecting with someone if you "knew" them, even if it was just through a mutual friend. Now that I am an educator, especially being in my hometown, I'm often finding myself viewing content of students parents or grandparents on Facebook. I never would have thought twice about being friends on Facebook with my cousin's best friend until there was a line of being a family friend and being her child's teacher, at the same time.
